My final year with Business Extra

It has been two years since I joined the board of Business Extra. I’m pleased that we have had some success in our goal of creating a diversified and sustainable town centre and my advice has helped formulate a strategy to support local business and traders in Walworth.

We’ve continued to deliver successful events in Walworth, including the Palm Sunday Easter Procession, and support for the Walworth Town Team and East Street Market. We also took part in delivering a Walworth pavement clean to make Southwark cleaner, safer and greener.

My colleagues have continued to draw attention in the local and London media that the regeneration of Elephant and Castle is leaving many of Walworth’s businesses fearful of the future. Footfall has dropped leaving traders and small businesses to feel the changes in the area is gentrification rather than regneration.

As I step down from board this year, I hope the Council give our local businesses greater support, including free parking for shoppers and a reduction in daily rent, throughout the whole year so they grow and prosper. I wish Business Extra and in particular the Chair Brian Hodge and Executive Director Patrick Blunt the very best for the future.
